Lifetime HOG^® rider Joseph “JD” Dubois, a self-proclaimed explorer, has “always felt an urge and need to get out and do things, see the world.”

After a couple of decades riding various Harley-Davidson^® bikes, JD is well established in the moto community. While pursuing his master’s degree in tourism management from Royal Roads University, he dove deep into what makes riders tick. His thesis – Understanding Motorcycle Tourism through a Study of Biker Culture – resulted in the following conclusion:

“It is clear that bikers have strong emotional reactions and attachments to riding and to the community and culture. These themes are consistent, and in keeping with positive emotions and feelings, produce a healthy and happy cultural experience for the riders involved.”

This “Freedom Biker” is improving moto culture one ride at a time

JD has ridden since he was a teenager, but settled into cruisers and longer rides with friends when he bought his first Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a 2013 Heritage Softail™. He became an active member of the Okanagan HOG Chapter, serving on their executive until 2016, when he suffered serious injuries after a distracted driver accident in Penticton while on a Poker Run.

But he was soon back in the saddle, now on a 2017 Softail^® Deluxe, which he affectionately calls “Taz Man.” His ride has benefitted from multiple enhancements, such as custom-designed airbrush artwork on the tank and fairing, straight pipes with fishtails and 16-inch ape bars.

After all these years, JD is invested personally and professionally in advancing the cause of positive rider experiences. He started Freedom Biker Tours to provide a “cage-free experience” by offering fully escorted and turn-key riding experiences across the country and beyond.

“It’s a feeling that you get when you ride – it’s a feeling of euphoria and it’s very therapeutic,” he said. “Your senses are so finely tuned, and you’re focused on what’s going on around you to such a degree where nothing else matters.”
